South Carolina's Fall Foliage must see's!
Your drive from Fort Mill, South Carolina to the Cherokee Foothills Scenic Byway will leave you breathless!
Now is the time to jump in your vehicle, and spend a weekend cruising down the Byway, AKA SC-11 to enjoy all that fall has to offer with the beautiful fall leaves in full color. There are several places to stop and enjoy on your drive that will leave you speechless.
The Cherokee foothills is the southern most peaks of the Blue Ridge mountains. It is a 120 mile route that takes you through peach orchards, past parks, lakes waterfalls and roadside farm stands. This two-lane road, was originally used by the Cherokee Indians and English & French fur traders.
Symmes Chapel, aka Pretty Place in Cleveland, SC has a breathtaking view. It is an open air chapel that overlooks the mountains. The current chapel was constructed in 1941 and has had a couple of renovations. Walhalla, known as Garden of Gods is filled with southern charm, along with antique shops, unique stores, great places to eat and Isaqueena Falls, located in Sumter National Forest. Stumphouse Tunnel is also located in Walhalla, It started in 1852 to connect Charleston to Knoxville and eventually on to Cincinnati, though the Civil War and lack of money brought construction to a halt. The tunnel is 17' x 25' high and halfway in is a 16x20 ft airshaft that extends 60ft upward.
Keowee-Taxoway State Park offers Lake Keowee with hiking and camping opportunities.
Take a .2 mile hike to Carrick Creek Falls in Table Rock State Park, where wading is allowed in the creek near the observation deck at the base of the 15 foot falls.
Poinsettia bridge in Greenville County is the states oldest surviving bridge. While Campbell's covered bridge is the only serving covered bridge.
Or stop by Cowpens National Battlefield a Revolutionary War site to learn about the history of this landmark.
