Tis the season to Volunteer

Fort Mill, where are you Volunteering this holiday season?

With the holidays within sight, we all get caught up in the millions of things that we have to do.  Make our holiday feast menu, get to the store to buy all of the food, hoping that they have everything at one store and not having to trapes to 3 or 4, buy gifts for everyone on our list, and it goes on and on.

How many times do each of us stop during this time of year and feel grateful for the things we have?  For the ability to have a warm house to be in, a hot meal to eat with our family and friends, or the money to pay for it all?  It truly is a blessing, and something that many people don't have.

I would like to challenge all of my readers to do something for someone else this holiday season that is less fortunate than yourself.  Something that could possibly not cost you a dime, other than maybe gas.  I would like for all of us to volunteer, if even for an hour.

There are a few places in the Fort Mill area that could use your help.  A couple hours of your day to give to someone that could use a warm meal, or even just a smile.

The Community Cafe operates 2 cafes in York County.  After speaking to Don, he mentioned that he wasn't sure if they were going to be able to have a Thanksgiving meal for the less fortunate this year.  It takes a lot of bodies to man the kitchen, pass out the food and clean up.  It takes donations of food to serve to feed the mouthes that come in.  If you can help, give Don a call. 330-289-1243

The two York County Locations:

River Hills Community Church, 104 Hamilton's Ferry Road, Lake Wylie, SC 29710
offers free lunches every Wednesday 12:30-2

Bethlem Baptist, 601 Joe Louis St. Fort Mill, SC 29715
offers freee evening meals every Wednesday 5:30-7

They also deliver meals to shut-ins

Dorothy Day Soup Kitchen, 902 Crawford Rd. Rock Hill, SC 29730, Across from St. Mary's Catholic Church
offers lunch from 11:30-12:30 Monday-Saturday

If you don't live in the Fort Mill or Rock Hill South Carolina area, you can go online to www.foodpantries.org to find your local pantry or soup kitchen.

If you don't have the time to volunteer, please donate to your local food pantry or soup kitchen.  There is always something we can do to help others.

Living between the Mountains and Beach

Fort Mill, SC gives you the opportunity to live between the Mountains and the Ocean.

One of the best things about living in Fort Mill, South Carolina is being right between the Atlantic ocean and the mountains.

Many people aren't "beach people," while others aren't "mountain people."  That makes Fort Mill a great place to live.  If you love the sand between your toes and the ocean breeze at your face, you are no more than 3 1/2 hours away from the beach.  Myrtle will take you 3 1/2, Wilimington/Wrigtsville beach is 3 1/2-4  and Charleston is 2 hours and 53 minutes.  Of course depending on what you like, and how far you want to drive, there are other beaches to enjoy.  It is wonderful to be able to go to the beach for the weekend if you'd like.

If being amongst the trees and nature, Fort Mill is 2 hours from the mountains and Pisgah National Forest.

Pisgah National Forest covers 512,758 acres of mountainous terrain in the southern Appalachian mountains, including parts of the Blue Ridge Mountains and Great Balsam Mountains.

Elevations reach over 6,000 get, and include some of the highest mountains in the eastern United States.  Mount Mitchell is the highest mountain east of the Mississippi River and lies just outside of the Pisgah National Forest.

You can hike and backpack and simply just enjoy all the beauty of the trees.

The Blue Ridge Parkway travels 252 miles along the ridge of the Blue Ridge Mountains.  It offers camping, hiking and biking to historical sites and other attractions.  It is also known for it's breathtaking views.
